I’m also surprised that Spence is still like #4 P4P in a lot of lists. 4 kings in any order are pretty clearly Inoue/Canelo/Kov/Bud (fuck you ironlungs), Usyk a ?? mark due to inactivity and injury and new weight class. Shocked that one ESPN panelist has Oscar Valdez at #7 and another has Valdez at #9.
Kosei Tanaka needs to get more props.
It’s tough to put Wilder ahead of guys like Estrada, Josh Taylor, and Beterbiev. But Wilder is must-watch boxeo, he goes from being pretty terrible to pretty deadly in a split second

Note FWIW that Jake Donovan at Boxing Scene put's the buys at 275K, closer to 300K once they finish counting it up

And he has multiple sources on the 275K nr, unlike Dan.
Now, I don’t know if those numbers are meaningful differences, but they are differences.

For the same reason DAZN and ESPN+ (and Netflix) don't.

As someone noted on Twitter not long ago, those numbers are internal data measures that are most valuable as marketing points for sales to other people in the TV/marketing biz. Revealing them officially causes them to lose value.

PBC took a bath...

If those numbers are correct. 225k x 80 =$18M, plus $4M gate. $22M x .5 for distribution fees, etc. leaves $11M to split. Wilder $10M, Ortiz $7M…
trying to check the math..but that leaves a loss of at least $6M, not counting the weak undercard.
However, I am surprised that 225k bought the bout.

If that’s the old number, the thing to remember is per Rutkowksi, the way Fox has changed the PPV biz is that they have much lower distribution costs than the old cable company models.

If I understood his explanations correctly it doesn’t make a lick of difference to PBC, they still got hosed. It’s FOX who takes a bigger share of the pie because they are also the distributors. For FOX it’s a win – win because if it’s on regular FOX, PBC is still buying the airtime from them and they get the ad revenue on top. If it’s on PPV, PBC still fronts the money to pay the fighters and putting the card together, and FOX get their share from the PPV.

That is my understanding as well.

With that being said, it is nice to know that fans such as yourself and Bonkers listen to high-level podcasts. Fox makes money, period. PBC is taking a bath, gambling that a PPV with Fury makes up for these losses (like Floyd getting $30M I believe for Berto on 300K buys).
I don’t really care who makes what, but I am putting my money in DAZN’s pocket so that I can have more quality fights on a regular basis.

Leo……..PBC is being paid by FOX to put on cards to the tune of 60 million per year. Fox and Show are fronting the money. PBC has about 120 million a year to play with. I do wonder if DAZN has pushed them to the point they lost money for Show and Fox though. We know DAZN has handed out deals that they aren’t making back stateside.

That's also possible. There's a lot of posturing.

Fact is…consumers like things that other consumers like. The most recent episode of Silicon Valley showed an Amazon product review farm. People are more likely to buy something if they think other people are also buying it. So there’s also a motive to leak inflated PPV buys, in the hopes that it will lead to bigger PPV sales the next time. There is a self-fulfilling prophecy aspect to these things, where something get big because it was supposed to be big. This really shone through with MayPac, people bought it because everyone was buying it and who doesn’t want to be part or something that is supposed to be the biggest thing ever? Even people who didn’t give a shit about boxing

To be fair Amazon reviews heavily influence search algorithms and ads on site. It’s not just about people liking it….a better reviewed product is also more likely to be seen.

They are also almost a full stack company, so when they see a company selling a lot of an item, lets say a standard household item, they just make their own version of the same thing and push their version via search etc.

Pretty sure Manny is still generating revenue. He did 900K PPV buys this year (as much as Spence and Wilder combined), and his next fight will probably be bigger (especially if he fights Spence or Porter).

Haha relax guys manny is my all time favorite boxer – the point I was trying to make was that these crazy purses were justifiable when the standard PPV was 1 mill + , huge in foreign countries & crazy gates (no majority comp tickets) but I don’t think they are now. Good on the fighters for getting paid though – it just won’t last and it will hurt the sport (and future prize fighters) in the future.
